What we want to help Vikasana to do for poor rural women in Mandya

What we want to help Vikasana to do for poor rural women in Mandya: Jobs Housing Schools Healthcare Sanitation

As well as attempting to assist the textile workers of Vikasana to increase their wages and attain housing, we wish to assist their kids to get the benefits offered to the kids of the beedi- makers:

* Under Central Govt’s labour welfare scheme, beedi workers’ kids receive stipends for studies which is as follows: Rs. 250 per year for lower primary students up to Rs. 1000 for HSC level, Rs. 1,500 for degree level and Rs. 5,000 each year for BE/MBBS or any other professional course.

* In addition, girl children of beedi workers get a cash incentive at the rate of Rs. 2 for each day’s attendance if the attendance is for more than 200 days in the previous class. After completing intermediate school, this scheme shifts to performance. For example, a girl student would receive Rs. 750 in year 11 for attaining 60 per cent marks in year 10.

* Mobile dispensaries are supposed to visit the localities of beedi workers twice in a week under the Central government’s health scheme under labour welfare.

We also wish to assist Vikasana in carrying out its other aims:

• Building houses with solar lights and toilets
•Imparting knowledge in subjects such as primary health, first aid, and prevention of illness.
• Training women and children groups to carry on the work in their family and community.
• Teenage support group. This group consisting of the ex-students, will support other needy women in their community in the fields of literacy, child-care, to acquire skills to support themselves.
• Helping the handicapped in the community in forming a support group.
• Setting up a library and rooms for the teacher trainees.
