FAQ about the elephant

There are hundreds of ways to reduce your carbon footprint.

If Australian Labor follows the British Labour Party’s path, company directors will have to show that they are managing current environmental risks, measuring them with the best key performance indicators, and aware of the likely future impacts on their business.

Our own green business success (click here to view) shows that we’re on top of the issues -- we can provide analysis and understanding of the business issues around climate change mitigation. We can provide a strategic and tailored overview of managing and reducing carbon emissions, within the context of working with complex regulatory structures while understanding the importance of good environmental practice to corporate reputation.

For most firms, staff transport, office waste, heating, lighting, office equipment and air conditioning should always be the first priorities.

Our audits cover:

  • photocopying
  • recycling
  • paper use
  • possibility for re-using toner cartridges
  • inward and outward freight and couriers
  • out-of-hours energy consumption
  • seasonal adjustments on control settings
  • turning off unnecessary electrical equipment in your office
  • maintaining appropriate local temperatures
  • office lighting
  • cleaning chemicals
  • packaging (yes! including of take-away foods!)
  • maintaining heating and cooling systems to ensure optimum efficiency
  • natural ventilation and night cooling. Windows should open.
  • public transport options
  • encouraging car sharing
  • solar power as backup
  • emergency water supplies
  • improving the efficiency of existing buildings
  • increasing the efficiency of appliances
  • reduction in vehicle use
  • use of fuels with decreased CO2 intensity - fleet conversion to LPG.
  • planting more trees around car-parks to cool the air and sequester carbon dioxide
  • automatic lighting controls could reduce your office lighting costs by up to 30%
  • daylight sensors for external lighting
  • timeswitches to reduce out of hours electricity use
  • disposal of obsolete technology
  • buying furniture built to last.

Our audits will make suggestions for improvements, and, if you wish, cost-budgets for improvement, with contacts for suppliers. We can also “project manage” the greening of your office. An audit of an office with eight staff and 100 sq.m. typically takes 90 minutes to conduct and, with reporting and analysis time, costs $495 including GST; with a budget, around $880.

Remember, if for any reason electricity supplies are interrupted, people will be trapped in lifts and will cook in non-aircon offices. Buildings have to be inhabitable without energy, a concept known as “passive survivability.” For example, the rooftops of Melbourne, if covered with solar panels, could produce nearly 28% of the city’s energy needs during daytime hours. They could power yours.
